We are told by our Lord Jesus to drink his blood,

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you have no life in you." (John 6:53)

and that means to share in His sufferings. But in the absence of pain,
what we can do is to fast or to abstain from worldly pleasures.
Inflicting pain on oneself is a sin.

"If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him.
For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple." (1 Corinthians 3:17)

But he answered, “It is written,

'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:4)

so the word of God is flesh or bread. Something we eat.

We are told by our Lord to love God with all our heart
and with all our soul and with all our mind,

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37)

But how can we love God whom we cannot see?

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."
(Galatians 6:2)

And the King will answer them, "Truly, I say to you,
as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,
you did it to me."
(Matthew 25:40)

"Do not love the world or the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world — the desires of the flesh
and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions —
is not from the Father but is from the world." (1 John 2:15-16)

"Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?
Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."
(James 4:4)
